The next step is to consider how you can give your dog a safe and positive outlet for these behavioral drives. For example, if your dog loves destroying their toys, maybe you can supervise the destruction of some old socks stuffed with kibble. Plus, by giving your dog an "appropriate" outlet for this type of behavior, they are actually less likely to seek out more undesirable outlets.
Puzzle toys are great ways to provide mental activation and, depending on the toy, can fulfill several other behavioral needs. Just make sure you don't end there. There are endless ways to enrich your dog's life, and most of them require a surprisingly little amount of effort or money. Just some creativity (and maybe a tiny bit of hoarding, too).
If you're interested in learning more about enrichment from me, I'll be offering a free workshop next month, so keep an eye out for those details! Go here to make sure you get those updates.
